SEASIDE Application

Fill out this application if you want to take SEASIDE courses in Summer 2024

IMPORTANT: Please submit only ONE complete application per student. If you want to make changes later, please email the details to seaside@dal.ca and/or jfrail@dal.ca and we will update your application. Additional applications and incomplete applications will be deleted.

Before you begin you will need:

  • A list of the courses you are interested in taking (please check pre-requisites listed in the Dal Calendar). Note that one course is online virtual (you are not required to be in Halifax), and the rest are in-person (you are required to be in Halifax). 
  •  Please note for students currently registered at Dalhousie, we will validate your responses with your Academic Record. Transcripts only need to be submitted for visiting students. 

By submitting this application you acknowledge that you are aware of the following (please read in full before you move on; moving on to the rest of the application shows us that you have agreed to these terms). 

  1. The schedule for a SEASIDE course is intense. It is not recommended to take another course or to work any hours at a job during the time you are taking a SEASIDE course. Accommodations will be made only at the discretion of the course instructor for students taking other courses or working during course dates or other time commitments outside of class (exception: online Intertidal Ecology, MARI/BIOL/ENVS 3664 which is 6 weeks, less-condensed).
  2. For everyone's safety, alcohol and recreational drugs are NOT allowed on any SEASIDE field trips, including off-campus overnight trips. 
  3. Understand that participation in the Program involves risks not found in study on Dalhousie’s campus. These include, but are not limited to, risks inherent in traveling to, and returning from the course location(s) and more limited access to health services. All in-person (and some online virtual) SEASIDE courses involve field work. As a certain danger is inherent in any field work, it is essential to remain alert, heed instructors' words of caution, and act in a responsible manner with respect to yourself and other class participants. It is the student's responsibility to come to all field trips well-rested and prepared, and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, as advised by instructors, for their comfort and safety. If you are not sure if you are physically prepared for a particular course, please consult with the course instructor.
  4. Be aware of Dalhousie’s Student Accommodation Policy and acknowledge that it is your responsibility to make an accommodation request under that Policy if you believe there is a barrier to your participation in the Program that is due to a characteristic protected by human rights legislation. Further understand that the assessment of accommodation requests in relation to SEASIDE courses can be more complex and therefore that you should make any necessary accommodation requests as early as possible.
  5. Students’ behaviour on SEASIDE courses has a significant impact on the learning environment for other students. Students who have been suspended as a result of a breach of the Code of Student Conduct or the Sexualized Violence Policy may not be eligible to participate in SEASIDE courses. Students who (1) have complaints pending against them under the Code of Student Conduct or the Sexualized Violence Policy or (2) have been found to have breached the Code of Student Conduct or the Sexualized Violence Policy (without suspension) and have not fulfilled the terms of any disciplinary or educational outcomes imposed as a result of that breach may not be permitted to participate in SEASIDE courses. Therefore, you consent to allow the Course Instructor and/or Administrative Director of the SEASIDE course to consult with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs or designate to confirm that you are eligible to participate in the SEASIDE course. 
  6. That acceptance into SEASIDE courses is not necessarily first-come-first-served. Your degree program, credit hours completed, status in Co-op, Certificates, and GPA play a role in acceptance, especially for high-demand courses (e.g., MARI 3627 Sharks). Also note that MARI 3680 Scientific Diving will also have additional application requirements.
